How to remove the background from an image
- Choose an image, drop it on the page, or paste it from your clipboard.
- Wait a few seconds. The first run downloads the model (about 5 MB) and the engine; later runs start straight away.
- Drag across the preview to compare the cut-out with the original.
- Keep the background Transparent, or pick White or a Colour, then download the PNG.
How it works
A segmentation network (U²-Net) looks at a reduced copy of your photo and estimates, for every pixel, how likely it is to belong to the main subject. That rough mask is then refined against the full-resolution photo with a guided filter, which snaps the outline to real edges such as hair, fur and product contours. The result becomes the image's transparency, so the subject keeps every original pixel.
Private by design
Most background removers upload your photo to their servers. This one doesn't: the model runs on your device through WebAssembly. That makes it safe for personal photos, ID-style portraits and unreleased product shots, and it keeps working once the page has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to remove backgrounds here?
Yes. You can remove the background from your images for free, at full resolution, with no account and no watermark.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The segmentation model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your own device, so your photo never leaves your computer or phone.
What kinds of photos work best?
Photos with one clear subject: a person, a pet, a product, a car or a plant, standing out from what's behind it. Busy scenes with several overlapping subjects, or a subject the same colour as its background, are harder to separate cleanly.
Can I put the subject on a white or coloured background?
Yes. Choose Transparent, White or any colour before you download. White is the usual choice for marketplace product photos.
Is there a size limit?
Images up to 16 megapixels (for example 4096 × 4096) are processed at full size. Larger images are reduced first, and the page tells you when that happens.
What format is the result?
A PNG. With the Transparent background it keeps an alpha channel, so you can place the cut-out on top of anything in a design tool, slide or web page.
